Lionel Messi, with Inter Miami, secured a dramatic 2-2 draw against Palmeiras on Monday, clinching a historic spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The Herons eliminated both Porto and Al Ahly of Egypt in the process. Hours after the game, Messi took to social media to share a heartfelt message about the team’s achievement.

Messi’s message after Inter Miami’s historic qualification

“Even though we could have won yesterday, the truth is we achieved a qualification to the Round of 16 that means so much to us as a club,” Messi wrote. “Another historic step for both Inter Miami and MLS,” said the captain, alongside a series of photos from the match.

Founded just over seven years ago, Inter Miami made its MLS debut in 2020 and has quickly become one of the most ambitious clubs in the United States. From Messi’s unmatched arrival to capturing both the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield—after setting a record for points in the regular season—the milestones continue to pile up.

Now, the club has added another achievement to its growing legacy. The draw with Palmeiras, which was nearly a win, ensured Inter Miami finished second in Group A, advancing to the next round. They outlasted Porto, one of the group favorites, who were stunned 2–1 by the Florida side—thanks in part to a moment of brilliance from Messi.

Messi and Inter Miami to face PSG next

Messi called the result a “historic step”, but he knows the job isn’t done. Inter Miami will now face Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning UEFA Champions League winners, in a highly anticipated Round of 16 showdown.
