Barcelona defender Dani Alves has not been able to agree to a new contract with the club and will hold a press conference on Tuesday to announce his decision to leave on a free transfer, according to the Spanish radio network Cadena SER.

The Brazilian is out of contract at the end of the season and has been free to negotiate with other clubs since January.

Barcelona and the player’s representative, Dinorah Santana, have been posturing for months with each side taking shots at the other in the press.

Last month, it was reported that Alves was on the verge of signing an extension with Barcelona. However, it appears negotiations have once again broken down between the two parties to the point where the right-back is prepared to leave the club.

Alves and his representative have been frustrated with the club’s lack of commitment to the defender. The feeling from the Brazilian’s point of view is Barcelona have continually proposed deals that were well-below the player’s worth and the club would not commit to a guaranteed contract for multiple years.

The 31-year-old Brazilian is one of the most beloved figures in the Barcelona dressing room and manager Luis Enrique had backed the defender in the press saying he wanted Alves to remain at the club past this season.

However, barring a last minute change of heart from either party, it appears Barcelona and Alves have reached the point of no return and the defender will leave the Catalan club shortly being honored with his teammates as La Liga champions this weekend.

In recent months, Alves had been heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, at one point it was understood that his agent was house shopping in France. Should today’s reports be true, it can be expected that the Ligue Un champions will once again be the front runners for the right back’s services.

Alves’ contract situation has also been monitored by Manchester City and Liverpool.
