The schedule for the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup is reportedly starting to take shape. Although FIFA expects to make an official announcement later this week, reports suggest certain dates. According to AS, the upcoming tournament will be played from Feb. 1 through 11. The Spanish outlet claims that the governing body of the sport informed Real Madrid of the schedule ahead of the official release.
The dates are not the only announcement for the tournament. In fact, reports emerged that the FIFA Club World Cup schedule is taking place in Morocco. The African nation was one of three potential hosts for the Club World Cup. The United Arab Emirates and 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar were also in the running.
This is Morocco’s third time hosting the Club World Cup. The previous instances were back-to-back in 2013 and 2014.
Sounders make history to qualify for tournament
Major League Soccer fans will have extra interest in the upcoming Club World Cup. Seattle Sounders qualified for the tournament after winning the CONCACAF Champions League back in May. It was the first MLS side to win the modernized version of the competition.
Upon qualifying for the Club World Cup, Sounders GM and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey couldn’t contain his excitement. “We’re going to play Real Madrid or Liverpool, man. In a real game,” proclaimed Lagerwey. “Not for giggles against their reserves, for a real trophy. Like, this is what you do it for. It’s … it’s just amazing. It is. I’d love to be real cool and calm, ‘ah, it’s no big deal’ but it’s a big deal.”
Full Club World Cup schedule of teams remains incomplete
The annual tournament features clubs that have won their confederation’s champions league. Along with Real Madrid and Sounders, Flamengo, Auckland City, Wydad AC, and the AFC Champions League winner will take part of the tournament in February. The AFC Champions League is currently in the knockout rounds.
Real Madrid, specifically, has some scheduling headaches. The Spanish giants will face Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Feb. 21. Real also has multiple LaLiga matches scheduled during this timeframe as well.
