Ronald Araujo has joined Liverpool on loan from Barcelona for the 2026-27 season, with a verbal agreement between the two clubs reached on Friday and approved by Barcelona sporting director Deco. The Uruguayan defender is set to undergo his medical on August 8 before the move is finalized.
The deal is structured as a season-long loan that includes an option, but not an obligation, for Liverpool to sign Araujo permanently at its conclusion. That setup allows the Reds to evaluate his fitness and form, which dipped following a 2024 injury setback, before committing to a longer-term deal, while also giving Barcelona breathing room on their salary cap to register the rest of their squad for the season.
Araujo‘s departure comes after he fell down Barcelona’s defensive pecking order despite being one of the club’s four captains. Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin, and Pau Cubarsi have established themselves as Hansi Flick’s preferred center-backs, while Jules Kounde remains first-choice at right-back.
The 27-year-old, who debuted for Barcelona in 2019 and has made 213 appearances with 14 goals, still holds a contract at the club through 2031 after renewing in January 2025.
For Liverpool, the move addresses an urgent need at the back. The club lost Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer, and head coach Andoni Iraola has been dealing with injuries to Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet, prompting him to request defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Araujo’s departure could coincide with Barcelona strengthening the very position that pushed him down the pecking order in the first place. The club is reportedly closing in on a two-year deal for Joao Cancelo, who would arrive from Al-Hilal for around €10 million.
Should the move go through, Flick would have two established options at right-back between Cancelo and Kounde, further reducing the need for Araujo as defensive cover on that side and reinforcing the logic behind sending him out on loan.
