In what could be one of the most controversial friendlies in recent soccer history, World Cup champions Argentina are reportedly preparing to face Russia in Moscow this November. The proposed fixture is already sending shockwaves through the international soccer community—not because of what it promises on the pitch, but because of what it means off it.

Despite Russia’s ongoing ban from FIFA and UEFA competitions following the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the Russian national team has remained active in international soccer—albeit on the fringes. And now, Argentina may become their highest-profile opponent yet, with reports indicating a friendly match could take place at the 81,000-seater Luzhniki Stadium during the November international break (between the 10th and 18th).

The stadium, which famously hosted the 2018 World Cup final, has already been reserved, and early reports from both Argentinian and Russian media point to a preliminary agreement already being in place.

Would Messi feature?

While the idea of Argentina facing Russia is explosive enough, the involvement—or likely lack thereof—of Lionel Messi adds another layer of intrigue. Sources close to the situation, including Goal, The Sun, and Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul, suggest that Messi is unlikely to travel to Moscow, primarily due to concerns from Western sponsors.

“Major Western sponsors would likely be uncomfortable with their partners playing in Russia,” several outlets reported, noting that any endorsement fallout could have wide-reaching consequences.

With the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner currently starring for Inter Miami in MLS and enjoying the twilight of his career, the risk of geopolitical backlash may outweigh the sporting appeal of another cap with the Albiceleste.

Russia’s soccer exile—and persistence

Since being suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions in early 2022, Russia has played 16 friendlies, mostly against Asian and African nations. Their last competitive match came in November 2021, a narrow 1-0 loss to Croatia.

Recent opponents have included Qatar, Iraq, Serbia, Cameroon, and now Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who are set to face Russia on June 6, 2025, also at the Luzhniki. Despite being in the soccering wilderness, Russia’s national team has stayed active—and productive—scoring big wins in recent friendlies, including 5-0 victories over Zambia and Grenada.
