Brandao gets suspended sentence after appealing Motta headbutt

Paris (AFP) – Bastia’s Brazilian striker Brandao was last month given a five-month suspended prison sentence and a 20,000-euro ($22,859) fine on appeal for his 2014 headbutt on Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Motta, judicial sources revealed on Wednesday.

Brandao, 35, was initially condemned to one month in prison by a Paris court along with the 20,000-euro fine in November 2014 but appealed that sentence.

That was reduced to a suspended jail term on appeal on April 15, according to the source.

Brandao butted Italy midfielder Motta, who was left with broken nose, in the tunnel at the Parc des Princes following a league match between PSG and Bastia in the capital on August 16.

The former Marseille striker also received a six-month ban from the game.

He had pleaded guilty to the attack but denied it was premeditated. Neither Motta nor PSG filed a complaint against Brandao but police used video footage from the tunnel to build a case against him.
