Manchester United signed Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon on August 19th for a reported fee of £16 million. But the defender has not been able to suit up for the Red Devils since his arrival at the English club due to a lingering issue with his work permit.
Earlier today, United informed the media and fans that the Argentina international has been granted a work permit and is now eligible to make his debut for the club, which should be on September 14th versus Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford.
“The UK Border Agency has agreed to grant #MUFC defender @MarcosRojo5 a visa and he will therefore be available to face QPR on 14 September,” said the tweet from Manchester United’s official Twitter account.
Rojo had flown to Madrid for an interview regarding his permit because of a reported altercation with a neighbor in Argentina four years ago and travelled to Lisbon today to finalize the paperwork. Although the 24-year-old was never prosecuted for the incident, the case was reopened in May and is theoretically still under investigation.
The versatile defender had missed United’s matches against Sunderland, MK Dons and Burnley due to the lingering issue.
The Argentina international was named to his country’s starting eleven for yesterday’s friendly win over reigning World Cup champions, Germany. Rojo played the entire 90 minutes of Argentina’s 4-2 victory in Dusseldorf.
