James Rodriguez has raised concern after the Colombia Football Federation issued a statement confirming the star had been hospitalized due to a “non-sports-related medical condition.” With both the national team and Minnesota United eager to have the midfielder fit for the 2026 World Cup, his recovery is being closely monitored by both parties.
The news broke on Thursday evening when the Colombia FA released an official update on Rodriguez’s condition, coming in the wake of his departure from international duty following the March friendly window.
“It has been confirmed, after establishing communication with a clinical center in the State of Minnesota, that the midfielder has been under professional observation due to a non-sports-related medical condition,” part of the statement released by the FCF read.
The federation revealed that on Monday, March 30, the day after the France game, Rodriguez was diagnosed with a severe case of dehydration that required hospitalization. The player remained under observation for 72 hours as a precautionary measure while undergoing clinical monitoring and recovery.

James Rodríguez of Colombia is challenged by Maxence Lacroix of France.
The news came as a shock given that Rodriguez had shown no visible symptoms while playing 63 minutes in each of Colombia‘s friendlies against Croatia and France. “It is important to clarify that this situation is not related to musculoskeletal injuries, nor is it linked to the performance of his football activities,” the statement added, leaving the origin of the player’s discomfort unclear.

Colombia and Minnesota United to monitor Rodriguez’s recovery
As confirmed in the statement, both the Colombian FA and Minnesota United will be jointly monitoring Rodriguez’s progress through his current condition. On a positive note, the latest medical report points to a favorable evolution and steady improvement, with no indication that his participation in the 2026 World Cup is at risk.
Minnesota are set to travel to face the LA Galaxy on Saturday, April 5, at Dignity Health Sports Park in the 2026 MLS season. While Rodriguez’s trajectory is encouraging, his return to training with the Loons remains unclear, making an appearance in that fixture unlikely.
Rodriguez’s fitness will remain a key concern for the Cafeteros, having captained the side in both March friendlies under head coach Nestor Lorenzo. Colombia open their World Cup group stage campaign against Uzbekistan on June 17, and with fewer than three months until the tournament begins, both club and country will continue keeping a close eye on their star player’s condition.
