Why isn’t Lionel Messi playing in Inter Miami vs. Pumas UNAM Leagues Cup match?

Inter Miami will face Pumas UNAM this Wednesday in a crucial Leagues Cup showdown — but they’ll be doing it without Lionel Messi, the team’s captain and global superstar. Fans hoping to see the Argentine back on the field will have to wait a bit longer.

Messi was forced off the field during Inter Miami’s 2–2 draw (and eventual penalty shootout win) against Necaxa last Saturday after experiencing muscle discomfort in his right leg.

The club later confirmed via an official statement that Messi had suffered a minor muscle injury, describing it as a “mild strain.” While the news brought some relief, it also meant that Messi would be unavailable for at least one or two weeks, depending on how he responds to treatment.

Mascherano: “It’s a mild injury”

Head coach Javier Mascherano addressed Messi’s condition in a press conference leading up to the match against Pumas: “It’s a mild injury. Within the bad, it’s actually good news. We don’t like to set exact timelines, but he won’t be available for tomorrow’s game. Once he’s ready, he’ll be back with us.”

The Inter Miami manager also emphasized that Messi usually recovers quickly, but the coaching staff is opting to be cautious, especially with a packed MLS and Leagues Cup schedule ahead.

Inter Miami’s plans without Messi

With Messi sidelined, Inter Miami will look to Luis Suárez to lead the attack, possibly supported by Tadeo Allende. Federico Redondo is also expected to step into the midfield to help balance the team in the absence of their number 10. Despite the setback, the team remains focused on securing a quarterfinal spot, needing a strong result against a Pumas side that also has five points in the group.

When could Messi return?

While there’s no official return date, Inter Miami hopes to have Messi back in time for the knockout rounds of the Leagues Cup — should they qualify. The club is not expected to rush his return, especially considering his history with muscle injuries and the long-term goals in both MLS and international duty with Argentina.

For now, fans will have to cheer on Inter Miami as they try to advance without their talisman — and hope that Messi is back sooner rather than later.
