Chelsea manager José Mourinho has suggested that the Blues’ Premier League rivals are attempting to buy the title.
The champions have watched their major rivals for the title strengthen significantly, while they have barely bought anyone save for replacements for departing players.
And Mourinho, who was accused of buying trophies in his first spell at the club, has promptly taken this opportunity to turn the tables on his title competitors.
Speaking after Chelsea’s penalty shootout victory over Paris Saint-Germain, the 52-year-old was in a divisive mood.
“In the beginning of Mr. Abramovich coming to Chelsea, Chelsea was buying the title,” he said.
“Now, they are buying the title. All of them, they are buying the title.”
“It is up to us to be strong and to fight them and, obviously, to try and win it again, even without the big investments.”
The Portuguese also praised the atmosphere in the stadium during the game and suggested that his side could come to America for a few matches, while Stamford Bridge is under redevelopment.
“This is a match where you are not obsessed with the result, we just want to train,” he said.
“You make changes to the team not tactically, you make changes because you have a plan to give a certain number of minutes to everyone, but the people made it a big atmosphere. Thanks a lot for that.”
“Maybe, when we don’t have Stamford Bridge for a couple of years, we can come here and play a couple of matches in the Premier League, because we know the support is fantastic.”
