Foden risks missing World Cup after coach Tuchel admission: England’s No. 10 battle intensifies

Thomas Tuchel was candid in discussing Phil Foden’s chances of making the England national team squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, given the fierce competition in that area of the field.

“Phil tried everything. I would say he was excellent in camp but he struggles to show it on the pitch,Tuchel admitted, according to The Guardian, following the March friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan. He struggles to have the full impact.”

Tuchel was then asked whether a player going through this kind of period in their career could still be considered for the World Cup roster. “I can,” he responded, but then clarified: “The question would be if we will. It’s not a guarantee that he will come.”

On Foden’s recent club performances, the coach offered his analysis: “He didn’t have a lot of minutes for City recently.” Yet he praised the midfielder’s attitude: “Then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training, and I thought he would just surprise us and play with the same verve and excitement.”

Foden not at his best

At Manchester City, Phil Foden appears to have lost some of the prominence he had until a few months ago. He has 10 goals and 5 assists in 41 matches this season, but in the last 10 games he has started only twice. He even remained on the bench without playing in four of those matches.

That did not stop Thomas Tuchel from calling him up for the March FIFA break and giving him minutes in both England games. Foden started against Uruguay and played 56 minutes before being replaced by Cole Palmer. A similar situation occurred against Japan, with Dominic Solanke coming on for him in the 59th minute.

England have plenty of options in that area

Questions about Foden’s inclusion in the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad are not only related to his current form at Manchester City but also to the wide array of options Tuchel has at the position.

In recent call-ups, the attacking midfielders included Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Eberechi Eze. Tuchel has even left the door open for 16-year-old Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman.

It’s clear that England will not have room for everyone. In fact, the coach was asked months ago about the possibility of including five No.10s in the roster. “I don’t see how this will help us,” he replied, making it clear that some players will inevitably be left out of the World Cup. That makes the next two months of club competition crucial in determining who claims the coveted spots.
