David Beckham and Peyton Manning star in World Cup ad

Soccer legend David Beckham and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning go head-to-head in a new World Cup ad.

The advertising commercial centers around the debate over soccer linguistics. Europeans, and practically the rest of the world, call it football. Here in the United States, it goes by soccer. Of course, football is the sport that Peyton Manning starred in for two decades. David Beckham was a top player in his own definition of football.

While Manning and Beckham bicker about what the proper nomenclature is, the debate spreads across the world, or at least the United States. Cameos from Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy call it soccer. Brandi Chastain even gives a throwback to her famous picture after winning the 1999 Women’s World Cup.

Later, Tim Howard and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez go face-to-face in a spot kick. The two both have World Cup experience, but differ with their respective languages over what to call the sport. Chicharito aims for the bag of Cheetos, which explodes upon the ball’s impact.

The debate between Manning and Beckham includes historical analysis over the two sports. European football dates back centuries, significantly longer than American football. Despite this, Manning calls upon the fans calling it soccer, while Beckham brings his own support of those calling it football.

In the end, it turns into one massive gathering of people prepared to watch the World Cup. With the tournament starting on Sunday, Nov. 20, it is certainly a time for people to gather and watch soccer, or football, whichever is preferred.

The commercial plays on the different words used for the same things. While Americans call them chips, the English call them crisps. We wear cleats when playing sports in the United States. Across the pond, they are boots.
