St. Pauli Sign Schalke Forward Asamoah

St. Pauli Punk-Rockers Return To The Bundesliga.

Newly-promoted St. Pauli have today signed experienced German international and Schalke striker Gerald Asamoah. St. Pauli made it their first priority during this transfer window to add to their firepower, and the signing of an experienced striker like Asamoah will surely add to their chances of staying up next season.

St. Pauli are on of Germany’s few ‘Kult-clubs.’ The town of St. Pauli is home to a world-famous red light district, and as a consequence attract quite an alternative crowd compared to other football clubs. During the 1980’s the Kult status of the club became prominent. The fanbase were left-wing, and created a kind of party atmosphere at matches. Because of Germany’s political situation in the 1980’s, the fans of St. Pauli stood alone and against what East Germany stood for at the time. St. Pauli even went as far as banning fascist signs or chants at their ground, which was very brave at a time where fascist hooliganism was quite rampant in Germany and in Europe.

St. Pauli quickly began to sell their stadium of 20,000 out every home game, and the fanbase became loyal and passionate about their club. Now, their return to the Bundesliga has come, for the first time in 8 long years. St. Pauli may not dazzle on the pitch, but the punk rock atmosphere of their home games will surely be a highlight in this upcoming Bundesliga season.
