Real Madrid and Manchester City go head-to-head on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu in the first leg of the 2025-26 Champions League Round of 16, a heavyweight clash between two of the competition’s perennial contenders. Stay with us throughout the evening as we bring you every key moment from what promises to be a memorable night in Madrid.

Real Madrid return to Champions League action following a controversial playoff series against Benfica, in which Vinícius Júnior and Gianluca Prestianni emerged as two of the central figures. However, Los Blancos head into the game far from their sharpest form, having managed just two wins from their last four matches across all competitions, including a defeat at home to Getafe at the Bernabéu.

Manchester City, meanwhile, arrive in better shape despite dropping points in the Premier League title race with Arsenal. Their last defeat came against Bodø/Glimt on January 20, and since then Pep Guardiola’s side have gone on an 11-game unbeaten run, collecting nine wins and two draws across all competitions.

With Semenyo in an offside position, his cross into the six-yard box to find Haaland was waved off, though Rüdiger had slid in to clear the danger regardless.

Pep Guardiola keep moving pieces on the pitch looking for the deficit: Bernardo Silva and Antoine Semenyo out, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri in.

Arbeloa makes another move from the bench, bringing Eduardo Camavinga in for Arda Guler.

The game is stopped as Aurelien Tchouameni falls to the ground over a discomfort in his right ankle.

63' – More chances for Real Madrid (3-0)

After Manchester City cleared a Vinícius cross, they tried to play out from the back but gave the ball away cheaply, allowing Arda Güler to have a go from distance, with his effort narrowly missing the target.

Having given away the penalty, Donnarumma made amends by guessing correctly and diving to his left to keep Vinícius out and preserve Manchester City's hopes.

After eluding Donnarumma, the goalkeeper brough Vinicius down, earning a penalty for Los Blancos.

After a sharp through ball into the box, Reijnders cut a cross into the middle of the area, but once again Haaland was unable to get on the end of it.

42' – GOOOOAAAAAAAL FOR REAL MADRID! (3-0)

On yet another swift counterattack, Real Madrid worked the ball to the edge of the box in search of a third, and Brahim Díaz, already into the area, delivered a delightful chip for Valverde to bring down and slot home, completing a remarkable hat trick and putting Los Blancos firmly in command.

41' – City getting desperate (2-0)

Unable to find a way back into the game, Manchester City are growing increasingly frustrated, with Doku picking up a foul on Huijsen as their pressing continues to yield little reward.

34' – Madrid sitting deep with a 2-goal lead (2-0)

With the two-goal cushion secured, Real Madrid have dropped deeper and are now sitting in a compact defensive shape, closing down the spaces and making it difficult for City to build any momentum going forward.

27' – GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL FOR REAL MADRID (2-0)

The recipient of another through ball from Vinicius, Valverde drifted to the left and curled a left-footed effort into the far post that caught Donnarumma badly positioned, completing a stunning brace in less than 7 minutes.

26' – City finding a well-positioned Real Madrid (1-0)

Having fallen behind, Manchester City are struggling to impose themselves against a well-organized Real Madrid side that has been difficult to break down.

20' – GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL FOR REAL MADRID! (1-0)

After play resumed following Silva's volley, Courtois launched a long ball forward to Valverde, who brought it down brilliantly in his stride, left O'Riley in his wake, and found himself one-on-one with Donnarumma before calmly sliding the ball into an open net to give Real Madrid the lead.

Finding the ball on the edge of the box, Bernardo Silva unleashed a half-volley that went just wide.

After a Doku cross came to nothing in the box, Real Madrid broke quickly on the counter, with Brahim Díaz getting off a shot that Donnarumma dealt with comfortably.

6' – Doku takes the first shot of the game (0-0)

After a lively opening spell in which both sides threatened on the counter, Jeremy Doku got off the first shot of the game, though Courtois had little trouble gathering it comfortably.

The match has begun!

Referee Maurizio Mariani blows his whistle, and the game between Real Madrid and Manchester City is underway.

Real Madrid vs. Manchester City: A rivalry with a peculiar curse

The clashes between Real Madrid and Manchester City have consistently delivered drama, whether through last-gasp comebacks or crushing defeats. But beneath all the spectacle, there is one thread that has run through every single one of their meetings.

Across the last five series between the two clubs, three won by Real Madrid and two by Manchester City, the team that scored the first goal of the tie has gone on to be eliminated every single time.

Who's the referee of the game?

Maurizio Mariani will officiate Wednesday’s Champions League clash. The 44-year-old Italian referee has previously overseen two Real Madrid matches (one win and one loss) and only one Manchester City game, a 5-0 win last season against Slavia Prague.

Real Madrid vs. Manchester City, a familiar rivalry in recent years

Manchester City have established themselves as one of the most dominant forces in European soccer, consistently reaching the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League under Pep Guardiola. And despite never sharing a domestic league, the Sky Blues and Real Madrid have developed into one of the competition's most compelling recurring rivalries.

The two sides have met in six of the last seven Champions League editions, with Los Blancos coming out on top in four of those series, compared to two for the English side.

Mbappe not the only star sidelined

One of the main reasons coach Arbeloa has opted for a five-midfielder setup is the lack of options up front, with Gonzalo García standing as the only forward with meaningful experience in the squad.

Beyond Mbappé, the most notable absentees for Real Madrid through injury are Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Dani Ceballos, David Alaba, Éder Militão and Álvaro Carreras.

Manchester City confirm their starting lineup

Pep Guardiola goes all-out with a lineup full of stars (4-2-3-1): Gianluigi Donnarumma, Abdukodir Khusanov, Ruben Dias, Marc Guéhi, Nico O’Reilly, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Savinho, Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland.

Real Madrid's starting XI confirmed!

Amid an injury crisis, coach Alvaro Arbeloa has made a change in the starting lineup, starting with five midfielders (4-5-1): Thibaut Courtois; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen, Ferland Mendy; Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Brahim Diaz, Thiago Pitarch, Arda Güler;  Vinicius Junior.

Kylian Mbappe, the biggest absence in the game

In a match full of star power, Kylian Mbappé stands out as the most notable absentee, having been left out of the squad entirely. The Frenchman has yet to recover from his knee injury, and both the player and the club have decided against rushing his return and risking a further setback. As part of his ongoing recovery process, Mbappé has traveled to Paris to continue his treatment.

Ahead of the Manchester City match, interim head coach Álvaro Arbeloa offered an update on the striker's condition:  “He is much better. It is something to take day by day. This whole week has been very positive, he has returned with great sensations and every day he is better. We are expecting him back very soon.”
