Is Genoa Crumbling?

Genoa's disappointment of 3-0 result against Lille

A couple of weeks ago, Genoa was the epitome of Italian football, a beautiful attacking 3-4-3 which created a myriad of scoring chances while entertaining the crowd. Now, Genoa lost the last two Europa League matches, the latest a 3-0 loss to Lille. In Serie A, they lost to Inter 5-0 at home, and just this weekend they lost 3-2 to Cagliari. They have conceded more goals than any other Serie A team and are currently tenth in the tables.

But what caused the sudden change in results? You can see that the team is trying to string together those devastating passes but something isn’t clicking. Genoa could be having a dip in form because of the fitness requirements of playing in Europe, and with the Serie A having to sometimes play multiple games during a week, the squad could be revealed as thin. This upcoming wednesday Genoa will play Fiorentina, and on the weekend they will play Palermo, two teams looking to knock the rossoblu out of the top half of the Serie A. These two Serie A matches are right before another Europa League match against Lille, which takes place the thursday after the Palermo game, and following the Lille match, Genoa will be at home to Siena.

Genoa have been playing double the matches of some teams and this could start to affect the results seriously, lets just hope that Il Grifone will rise back up to it’s spectacular levels.
