Christian Pulisic has rejoined his Chelsea teammates on the training pitch after recovering from a knee injury. However, Evening Standard reports that the USMNT star only took part in partial training on Wednesday. It remains to be seen if Pulisic will be ready to take part of a crucial Premier League matchup with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Chelsea head coach Graham Potter previously said that Pulisic would be out for a couple of months in early January. “Christian’s going to be out for a couple of months we think. Hopefully it will be less, but that’s the timeframe there,” Potter said on January 11th.
USMNT star has missed over 50 Chelsea matches
Pulisic hasn’t played since suffering a knee injury against Manchester City on January 5. His time with the Blues has unfortunately been riddled with various injury setbacks. In fact, the American has already missed 53 total matches with the west London club since his arrival in 2019.
Nevertheless, Pulisic’s return could be a significant boost for Potter. Despite spending $575 million on new players this season, the club still can’t score goals. Chelsea have managed just three goals over their last seven Premier League matches.
Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, and Noni Madueke were all brought in to help bolster the team’s attack and take playing time away from Pulisic. However, only Sterling has scored more than one goal for the team at this point in the season.
Attacker’s fitness could determine future club
Pulisic could also use the remainder of the current campaign to help show other teams what he is capable of. It appears highly unlikely that the American will remain with the club passed the summer transfer window. Despite his injury struggles with the Blues, a successful finish to the season could attract plenty of suitors ahead of the window.
USMNT legendary goalkeeper Brad Friedel believes that Pulisic should leave Chelsea. Meanwhile, based on reporting by ESPN, it appears quite likely that Friedel’s wish may come true.
With Pulisic back in training, even if Pulisic isn’t ready to play for Chelsea against Spurs this weekend, there’s a possibility he’ll be ready for next week’s game against Leeds.
