Bournemouth becomes 10th US-owned Premier League club

Bournemouth is the newest club to be a part of the US-owned teams in the Premier League

American businessman Bill Foley has finally completed his takeover of Bournemouth. The 77-year-old Las Vegas Golden Knights owner was previously in talks with the Premier League club for months. Foley’s group, which also includes actor Michael B. Jordan, purchased 100% stake in the team from Maxim Demin.

Demin departs after 11 successful years with the club. The Cherries previously climbed from League One to the Premier League in just five years under Demin’s ownership. Foley committed to this advancement of the team in an official statement.

Owner adopts ‘always advance, never retreat’ approach

“I have tremendous respect for the passion and support the Bournemouth community shows for this club and believe that connection to the community is the foundation for success of any sports team,” said Foley.

“We will move forward with an ‘always advance, never retreat’ approach that has defined all of my endeavors. I am committed to work with the best football and business minds available to enhance player development, facilities, and the fan experience to put A.F.C Bournemouth in the best possible position to succeed.”

Bournemouth the latest US-owned club in the Premier League

Sky Sports is reporting that the purchase price exceeded $124 million. Other outlets are claiming Foley’s group paid around $186 million to complete the deal. Regardless of exact figures, Foley is now the 10th American to own a Premier League club.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester United, and West Ham all currently have American owners. Therefore, U.S. businessmen back half of all English top flight teams.

“Without the belief and financial backing of Maxim and his family, A.F.C Bournemouth might well have ceased to exist,” Foley continued. “Maxim’s support and involvement has allowed the club to establish itself as a top-flight team.”

Along with becoming the new owner, Bournemouth named Foley as the club’s chairman. He will be in attendance for Bournemouth’s next match against Palace on December 31st. Foley has also already purchased a new home in the area as well.
