Asuncion (AFP) – Former Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao boss Eduardo Berizzo has been named as the new Paraguay head coach, the country’s football federation announced on Monday.
The 49-year-old last coached Bilbao, but was sacked in December after just one win in 14 league matches.
He takes over from Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio, who quit the job last week after only one game in charge — a 1-1 friendly draw with South Africa.
Paraguay have been drawn in Group B for the 2019 Copa America in Brazil, which starts on June 14, alongside Berizzo’s native Argentina, Colombia and 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar.
Berizzo led Sevilla in their successful 2017-18 Champions League group-stage campaign, but was sacked just a month after being diagnosed with prostate cancer following a poor run of form.
