Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger faces a three-match ban after being charged with violent conduct by England’s Football Association. The Germany international was charged after his elbow struck West Ham’s Winston Reid during Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
The incident occurred as United’s players lined up at the edge of West Ham’s penalty area, preparing to run onto a first half restart from the right flank. As Reid went to mark Schweinstieger, the midfielder landed a left elbow just below Reid’s jaw. Although referee Mark Clattenburg did not punish Schweinsteiger, the FA’s post-match review deemed the contact worthy of suspension.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.
The Manchester United midfielder was involved in an incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid in the 40th minute of the game on Saturday 5 December 2015.
The matter was referred to a panel of three former elite referees who each reviewed the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they considered it a sending-off offence.
For an FA charge to follow the decision by the panel must be unanimous.
The player has until 12noon on Thursday 10 December 2015 to reply to the charge
Should Schweinsteiger’s penalty be upheld, he will miss the club’s trip to Bournemouth (Dec. 12), Norwich City’s visit to Old Trafford (Dec. 19) and the team’s Boxing Day match at Stoke City – all Premier League games. He is still eligible to play in Manchester United’s Tuesday Champions League visit to Wolfsburg.
In his first year with Manchester United, Schweinsteiger has made 21 all-competition appearances, scoring his first and only goal for the club on Nov. 28 at Leicester City.
