“I don’t know anything.” That was Lionel Messi’s short but telling response when asked about his future and a possible contract renewal with Inter Miami. The Florida-based club is currently holding its breath as the days go by without confirmation. Under Javier Mascherano, the team recently drew 3–3 with Philadelphia, again exposing defensive weaknesses. With the Club World Cup fast approaching, fans and staff are hoping that Messi will raise the team’s level—and commit his future to the project.
Messi’s current contract is set to expire on December 31, 2025. For many, that casts doubt over the long-term vision spearheaded by David Beckham in Miami. A renewal would be crucial for club planning moving forward. After Messi scored a stunning free-kick against Philadelphia, Mascherano made a public plea for the club and player to finalize an extension as soon as possible.
“I’m not the one who should speak on this. There’s a sporting department responsible for these decisions,” Mascherano said in a press conference. “As a coach, I hope Messi renews as soon as possible. The fans and the whole club need that peace of mind. I’m not involved in negotiations, I have no idea what’s happening, but we hope to hear good news soon.”
All signs currently point to a possible extension that would keep Messi at the club until at least mid-2026, aligning with the next FIFA World Cup. It would allow Messi to remain in top form ahead of Argentina’s title defense following their triumph in Qatar in 2022.
Mascherano, who shares a close personal and professional relationship with Messi, continues to speak with him daily:
“I talk to Leo every day, not just with him but with the other senior players. I always try to get a sense of what the team feels. Coaching isn’t about being stubborn with your ideas. It’s a constant back-and-forth. We present our approach, but it’s vital that the players feel comfortable.”
Only a few home games remain—against Montreal and Columbus—before Inter Miami kicks off their Club World Cup campaign against Al-Ahly. The tournament represents a massive opportunity, but the team’s defensive issues remain a serious concern.

As of May 26, 2025, Inter Miami has conceded 24 goals—more than any MLS team except DC United (27) and CF Montreal (25). If the trend continues, even advancing past the group stage at the Club World Cup may be at risk.
The calls for Messi’s renewal grow louder—not just for Inter Miami, but for the long-term outlook of Argentina’s national team. New developments are expected before the end of the current semester.
