Wayne Rooney on shortlist for Everton job if Lampard sacked

Wayne Rooney is in the line to take over as Everton head coach if the club fires Frank Lampard. Currently, the Toffees are sit in the Premier League relegation zone with Lampard currently skating on thin ice with team officials.

The Daily Mail suggests that Rooney is on the shortlist to potentially succeed Lampard. Other possible coaching candidates include Sean Dyche and Roberto Martinez. Dyche most recently spent 425 games at the helm of Burnley. The club sacked the Englishman last season with the team bound for relegation from the top flight.

Everton fans will be quite familiar with Martinez. While he managed to take the team up to fifth in his first season at the helm, the Spaniard could never replicate the relative success on Merseyside. Everton sacked Martinez after three years at the club.

Wayne Rooney previously rejected chance to coach Everton

Rooney began his Premier League playing career with the Toffees. Then, the Goodison Park outfit offered him the opportunity to coach the club. Nevertheless, he claimed he turned down the proposal while he was coaching Derby County. The Rams entered administration and Rooney wanted to help the club’s attempts to right the ship. However, Derby was relegated following the 2021/22 campaign.

Now with Major League Soccer side D.C. United, Rooney hasn’t exactly been a success in the States either. The England legend has managed to win just two of his 14 games in charge in the nation’s capital. Moving to a Premier League club while United is in their offseason could be too good of a chance to pass up.

Lampard needs victories to save job

Lampard helped save Everton from relegation last season after arriving in January. Nevertheless, the Toffees are right back to fighting to remain in the Premier League. Everton currently sit in 18th place of the league table. Lampard suggested on Thursday that he does not need assurances from club brass, but victories are needed to save his job.

Everton have not collected a win in their last six Premier League fixtures. And they only have one victory in their last 10 league matches. Lampard will try to advance in the FA Cup on Friday as the club faces Manchester United next. A disaster at Old Trafford could very well signify Lampard’s last match in charge of Everton.
