USMNT Coach Jurgen Klinsmann On Short List for Switzerland Job, Says Report

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann is on the short list as one of the candidates for the Switzerland national team manager position, according to German sport website Spox. According to the newspaper, the Swiss have already begun discussions on who could take the job.

The Swiss Football Federation are looking for a replacement to succeed Ottmar Hitzfeld, who will resign from his position at the end of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Both Switzerland and the United States have already qualified for the tournament.

Klinsmann is on the short-list with several other managers including Christian Gross, Thorsten Fink, Pierluigi Tami, Vladimir Petkovic and Robert Di Matteo.

Speculation regarding Klinsmann’s future as head coach of the US Men’s National Team has been quiet recently. However, as the German website points out, Klinsmann’s contract expires after the 2014 World Cup, and a contract extension is currently not on the cards.

The likelihood of Klinsmann taking the Switzerland job appears to be slim, but the longer the USSF delays trying to extend Klinsmann’s contract, the greater the chances are that there’ll be press speculation regarding his future. Under his coaching, Klinsmann won the 2012 Gold Cup and qualified the US Men’s National Team for the 2014 World Cup. The ball is now in the USSF’s court to put their trust in Klinsmann post 2014.
