Tottenham challenges Chelsea for Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique could have his choice of two top Premier League clubs this summer. Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning to talk with the former Barcelona boss about their managerial vacancy. Enrique has also already interviewed with Chelsea about possibly joining the Blues this summer.

The Telegraph is claiming that Spurs are stepping up their pursuit of a manager and will strongly consider Enrique. Potential discussions with the coach could even take place as early as this week. Enrique recently made it known that he wants to manage in the Premier League soon.

Chelsea, Tottenham look to Luis Enrique as solution to form issues

Both London clubs are underperforming during the current campaign. Despite having a net spend of nearly $600 million, Chelsea have endured a disastrous season. The Blues are currently on their third head coach of the campaign and sit 11th in the Premier League standings. Frank Lamapard was brought back in to help right the ship earlier in the month, but it hasn’t helped as of yet. In fact, Chelsea are currently closer to the relegation zone than to fifth-placed Spurs.

Although they have not been as bad as the Blues, Spurs are also on the outside of a Champions League place. The north London club have been streaky yet unstable throughout the 2022/23 season. Team brass fired Antonio Conte in March and Cristian Stellini is now coaching the club on an interim basis. Spurs are three points behind Newcastle for the final Champions League spot. However, the Magpies have also played one fewer match compared to Spurs.

Other coaching options remain open for both teams

Along with Luis Enrique, Tottenham and Chelsea are interested in Julian Nagelsmann as well. The former Bayern Munich boss was also recently interviewed by Chelsea officials. It certainly seems that whichever team makes the first move, dominos will then start to fall in place for the other club.

However, Spurs also hold interest in a few managers not thought to be in the running for the Chelsea job. Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and the club’s former manager Mauricio Pochettino have also been linked with Spurs. Kompany has led Burnley back to the Premier League after an outstanding freshman season with the team. Pochettino, on the other hand, has been without a coaching job since departing PSG last summer.
