Sunday's Bundesliga Review: Bayern Munich Maintain Form

Super Mario Gomez!

With Dortmund winning on Saturday, it was imperative that both Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich pick up wins to keep the pressure on the league leaders. Fortunately for Die Roten, Hoffenheim suffered a shock one-nil loss at home to Freiburg, which means a climb back up the table for Bayern Munich gets just that bit easier. Let’s get to the results.

TSG Hoffenheim 0 – 1 SC Freiburg

This match was definitely Hoffenheim’s game to lose, and they did just that. There’s nothing positive to take from this game without the three points, and to lose at home is even more of a disappointment. Freiburg have pulled off a few of these big results already this season, and they’ll be boosted by the win. Papiss Cisse, who has been Freiburg’s hero again and again this season, scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the game. It’s a big blow for Hoffenheim, who could have pushed themselves into the top three with a win here.  Now, Freiburg are lifted to 4th in the table, while Hoffenheim slide down to 8th.

Bayern Munich 3 – 0 Nurnberg

This is the kind of convincing victory Bayern Munich needed. Mario Gomez could and should have hit his third hat-trick of the month, but missed a spot-kick three minutes from time. Gomez opened the scoring and closed the scoring, with Philipp Lahm scoring from the spot between Gomez’s brace. On top of what was a great win, Franck Ribery and Breno returned for the reigning champions. Nurnberg will be disappointed with the result, especially after playing so well lately. Ilkay Gundogan failed to impress against the champions this time around, but there’s still a lot more to come from the young German midfielder.
