Spanish Guardia Civil pinpoints likely cause of Diogo Jota accident

The initial findings from the investigation into the car crash that killed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, last week on the A-52 highway in Cernadilla (Zamora), point to excessive speed as the likely cause, the Spanish Civil Guard announced on Tuesday.

The forensic report is still “ongoing” and will specifically examine “the marks left by one of the vehicle’s tires,” but “everything suggests the car was exceeding the authorized speed limit,” the Civil Guard confirmed.

According to the same source, it is highly likely that Diogo Jota was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, which occurred during the night of June 25 to 26.

Traffic investigators are currently analyzing the tread marks left by one of the car’s tires to complete the report. The official report by the Civil Guard in Zamora is not yet finalized and, once completed, will be submitted to the Court of First Instance and Instruction in Puebla de Sanabria (Zamora), which is handling the legal proceedings related to the crash.

The Portuguese international and his younger brother—also a professional player in Portugal’s second division—were both pronounced dead at the scene when emergency services arrived.
