Chelsea have not managed to produce their best season. Following the dismissal of Enzo Maresca, they opted for a radical change, identifying Liam Rosenior as their ideal candidate. However, the Blues failed to improve under the Englishman, who was also dismissed after just three months in charge. As a result, Rosenior set an unwanted club record, becoming the manager with the fewest matches before being sacked.

While Liam Rosenior arrived as a promising candidate, he failed to establish a competitive identity for the squad, racking up 10 losses, 2 draws, and 11 wins. As a result, they announced his dismissal, with a statement in their website: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior… recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.

Following his official dismissal, Liam becomes the shortest-serving permanent manager in the club’s history, having overseen just 23 Premier League matches. While names such as Bruno Saltor, Clum McFarlane, Graham Rix, and Frank Lampard appear on the list, they all served only as interim managers. As a result, Rosenior now leads this category, casting a very poor light on his tenure.

Along with Rosenior, the Blues have amassed an interesting list of head coaches who didn’t last long, with Graham Potter being the next on the list, as he was fired after 31 games during the 2022–23 season. Next, Luiz Felipe Scolari emerges, being fired after 36 games in the 2008-09 season. After him, André Villas-Boas appears, having been fired after 40 games in the 2011-12 season. Rounding out the list is Roberto Di Matteo, who was fired after 42 games in 2012.

Report: Chelsea have pointed to Calum McFarlane as interim coach

Having just four games remaining in the 2025-26 season, Chelsea have decided to adjust their sporting project, aiming to secure a place in European competitions. Sitting in eighth position in the Premier League, the Blues would likely need to win all of their remaining games just to keep that hope alive. With this objective in mind, they have reportedly turned to Calum McFarlane as interim head coach.

According to Fabrizio Romano, via X (formerly Twitter), Calum McFarlane will serve as the Blues’ interim head coach until the end of the season. This would mark his second stint with the team, having already managed two matches in January 2026, giving him first-hand familiarity with the squad. However, he is not expected to be a long-term solution, as Chelsea will likely explore other options in the summer of 2026.

Chelsea’s problems run deeper than just the manager

Since Todd Boehly’s arrival at Chelsea, the club appear to lack a clear direction at the sporting level. Under Enzo Maresca, they signaled an attacking approach, appointing a coach with proven success at the elite level. However, the Blues have moved away from experienced veterans, instead placing their trust in younger players. As a result, they have struggled to find consistency, making this one of the first issues that needs to be addressed.

Without experience in the defensive line, the Blues have faced significant difficulties, as Jorrel Hato, Trevoh Chalobah, and Wesley Fofana have not performed as expected. Consequently, they may need to sign a world-class defender capable of leading the team—similar to what Liverpool did with Virgil van Dijk. In addition, Chelsea could require a reliable goalkeeper, as Robert Sánchez has not had his best season, raising serious concerns.
