Sergiño Dest agrees loan deal to Union Berlin, says report

Sergiño Dest looks ready for yet another year on loan. The United States men’s national team star is currently spending the 2022/23 season on loan with AC Milan. The Italian giants secured his loan deal from Barcelona last September and the agreement also included a permanent transfer option. However, Milan apparently will not trigger the $22 million fee to sign the full-back.

Mi Bundesliga is now reporting that Dest will spend the 2023/24 campaign with Union Berlin. The German outlet claims that Barca and the east Berlin club have already agreed to the temporary deal. An official announcement on the pending agreement should be revealed at the conclusion of the current campaign.

Injuries have hampered defender’s playing time

Barca previously purchased Dest for around $24 million in 2020. The American was seen as one of the top prospects in his position at the time. However, the versatile youngster has not been able to hold down a regular starting role with the Spanish giants.

Dest’s move to Milan was supposed to help give the American more time on the pitch. Nevertheless, Dest has managed just eight total Serie A appearances for the club this season. Injuries have certainly not helped the American nail down a starting spot. In fact, Dest has not played a match for Milan since late January. He did, however, feature for the USMNT during a recent Nations League matchup with El Salvador in March and the Continental Clasico against Mexico in April.

Move to Union Berlin could give Sergiño Dest more UCL experience

Union Berlin is currently one of the most intriguing teams in all of Europe. The Iron Ones are sitting third in the Bundesliga standings. Only the undeniable top two German clubs, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, are above Berlin in the table. If they continue to remain in the top four, the club will secure Champions League soccer for the first time in their history. Union Berlin did not even reach the German top flight until 2019.

Although Dest is a regular for the USMNT, he could certainly use some stability at the club level. A positive season in Germany, especially with European competition, would be exactly what the defender needs.
