Saudi Arabia grabbed headlines on Tuesday after upsetting pre-tournament favorites Argentina by 2-1.
The Asian side scored two quickfire goals in the second half overturning a one goal deficit at the break to beat the La Albiceleste that would eventually go down as one of the greatest World Cup upsets of all time.
Herve Renard inspires his team
Despite the heroics on the field, it was Saudi’s coach Herve Renard who captured the attention later after the game on social media.
The 54-year-old’s inspiring half time speech has gone viral over the internet and would surely go down as one of the most memorable moments of the World Cup.
The Frenchman was a mere onlooker from the dugout seeing his side’s defense being torn apart by Argentina time and again in the first half.
However, thanks to offside and VAR calls, the Saudis went into the break just a goal behind despite Argentina having the ball in the back of net four times.
Half time was where Renard earned his plaudits. The head coach delivered a passionate speech starting off by,
“What are we doing here. This is our pressing? Messi at the middle of the pitch, he has the ball, you stay (hands up) in front of the defense. You don’t know you have to go and mark him in the middle? Take your phone, you can take a picture with him if you want.”
Renard continued, “Don’t you feel something? Don’t you feel we are able to come back? You don’t feel it? Come on guys, this is the World Cup. Give everything.”
Team talk delivers results
The speech clearly worked as his side came out with all guns blazing. Saleh Al-Shehri restored parity three minutes from the restart while Salem Al-Dawsari scored a stunning right footed curler five minutes later to turn the game on its head.
Argentina, shellshocked with the course of events hardly recovered giving Renard’s side a memorable win.
The Frenchman has been in the spotlight for several years before taking up the Saudi job in 2019.
Renard earlier coached Zambia and the Ivory Coast to African Cup of Nations victories and also helped Morocco qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
It remains to be seen however Saudi can qualify for the knockout stages after stunning Lionel Messi and co.
