Relegation-threatened Blackpool part ways with Mick McCarthy

Blackpool and Mick McCarthy have agreed to part ways. The head coach was brought in to help save the Championship club from relegation into League One.

However, McCarthy won just two of 14 total matches at the helm. His final game in charge was a 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City on Friday.

“Blackpool Football Club can confirm Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor have both left the club by mutual consent,” a statement by the club read. “With results on the pitch not improving in recent weeks, the decision has been agreed by both parties that a change is needed.”

Coach claims decision is best for everyone involved

McCarthy also issued a statement on the decision as well, saying that the move was best for the team. “After recent performances and results, I have thought long and hard and feel this is the best decision for everyone concerned with the football club,” claimed the coach.

“I’ve loved my time here and thank everyone for their support. I wish everyone well going forward.”

The Irish coach joined the club in January after Blackpool sacked Michael Appleton.

However, just as they did under the previous regime, the Tangerines struggled with McCarthy. Defensive issues were quite clear in recent months. McCarthy’s side allowed 26 goals in 14 total matches with the club. This includes giving up 10 goals in their last three Championship games.

Dobbie appointed head coach for remainder of season

Blackpool will now go with Stephen Dobbie as head coach for the remainder of the current campaign.

Dobbie was previously the team’s senior professional developmental lead phase coach. He is set to be joined by assistants Matt Blinkhorn and Steve Banks.

Dobbie has just six fixtures left to try to save the season. Blackpool are currently 23rd in the Championship table, seven points from safety.

The tough task to avoid relegation doesn’t get any easier, as the club next travel to Luton Town on Monday. Luton is currently third in the standings.
