Raheem Sterling expected to tell Liverpool he wants to leave

Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling is set to hold crunch talks with manager Brendan Rodgers and chief executive Ian Ayre, where it is expected the 20-year-old will ask to leave the Merseyside club this summer.

Last month, the England international reject the notion that he was a “money grabber” during an interview with the BBC, shortly after the player turned down a new £100,000-a-week contract from the club.

At the time, Sterling said he “talks about winning trophies rather than money”. And it appears the forward feels Liverpool aren’t set up to win titles.

Liverpool’s last piece of silverware came during the 2011-12 season when they defeated Cardiff City on penalties 3-2 to win the League Cup.

The Merseyside club is set to miss out on the Champions League next season and future top four finishes will be more and more difficult with the expected summer spending of league rivals: Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United.

With that in mind, Sterling appears ready to walk away from the club where he has flourished during the past three seasons.

However, Liverpool will be determined to keep hold of the talented 20-year-old, whose contract ends in June 2017.

The club had to deal with similar issues when Luis Suarez made it known he wanted to leave Anfield on several occasions, before the striker ultimately moved to Barcelona last summer.
