Newcomers Almeria shock Real

La Liga newcomers Almeria, founded as recent as 1989, celebrate what could be their biggest result on Saturday with a 2-0 win over visitors Real Madrid.

Bernd Schuster (Real Madrid manager) warned his squad to not be complacent with the current lead atop the La Liga table, after the match he went on to say,

“The other day I heard someone smart saying how the league was poor because of our points advantage over the rest but this shows the strength of the Spanish league and why it is the most competitive in the world.”

Almeria jumped ahead at the 15 minute mark when Real failed to defend a set-piece properly, allowing Juanito to open the scoring and place one in the old onion bag. Ten minutes later Almeria were fortunate not to have goalkeeper Diego Alves sent off for a blatant charge on Sergio Ramos outside of the penalty area. Iker Casillas was furious that Alves received a light sentence and his protests led to him receiving the same punishment as Alves, both receiving yellow cards.

Two minutes into the second half things did not get any better for the visitors as Real defender Fabio Cannavaro fouled Negredo in the penalty area who later converted the penalty. However the additional goal ended as icing on the cake for Almeria who maintained a clean sheet on the day.

This was a fourth straight win for Almeria helping them climb to seventh, for Real it was their first lost after a sequence of eight successive league wins.

Tomorrow Barcelona play Osasuna at the Nou Camp and a win for Barca will shorten Real’s lead to 6 points. Let the games begin again Ole!
