Al-Nassr’s new chapter is already turning heads—and not just because of the tactics. Shortly after his official appointment as manager of the Saudi Pro League side, Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus took center stage with a passionate defense and praise of his new captain. In a revealing interview, the 70-year-old veteran dropped a bold four-word claim about Cristiano Ronaldo’s stature that has since echoed across the footballing world.
On July 14, Jorge Jesus was named the new head coach of Al-Nassr, following his departure from Al-Hilal, where he led the club to a national title in the 2023-24 season. This new role marks his second venture into Saudi Arabian football, and his mission is clear: return Al-Nassr to silverware and elevate their global profile, with none other than Cristiano Ronaldo as the spearhead.
In an interview with RTP’s Primeira Pessoa, Jesus made it clear that Ronaldo was a major factor in his decision to accept the job. “Without his invitation, I certainly wouldn’t be there. The motivation will be great. I’m going to try to ensure that Al-Nassr, which is one of the best clubs in Saudi Arabia, can win titles,” he said.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who has always won everything he’s played for. He hasn’t won in Saudi Arabia yet. I’ll see if I can help him.”
“He’s far beyond the world of football”
While discussing Ronaldo’s longevity and impact, Jorge Jesus didn’t hold back. He marveled at the fact that the Portuguese forward continues to perform at a high level at age 40, pointing out the rare combination of athletic endurance and cultural relevance that Ronaldo embodies.
“It’s a sporting challenge. Ronaldo is different, even in biological age, which is why he’s 40 and still playing. We both think very much alike outside of football,” Jesus noted.
The coach drew parallels between his own continued energy at 70 and Ronaldo’s ability to defy aging norms, saying: “I am 70, but I don’t feel it in my psychological and physical life.”
Then came the now-viral statement, as Jesus addressed how his homeland views the five-time Ballon d’Or winner: “We don’t know how to value Ronaldo in Portugal. He’s a global figure. He’s the world’s greatest human figure. He’s the world’s greatest celebrity. He’s far beyond the world of football.”
