NBCSN’s live broadcast of Manchester City against Liverpool on December 26 was viewed by an average of 704,000 people, the highest figure ever for a Boxing Day Premier League match shown on US television.
The Manchester City-Liverpool match was shown live beginning at 12:30pm ET on Thursday, the day after Christmas. While the day is a national holiday in the United Kingdom, it’s not a holiday in the United States, which makes the fact that it’s the highest viewing audience for a weekday Premier League match so far this season even more impressive.
So far, NBCSN has posted three of the four most-watched Premier League cable telecasts on record.
Meanwhile, the December 23 match between Arsenal and Chelsea, televised live on NBCSN, was watched by an average of 565,000 and ranks as the second most-watched weekday Premier League match this season. The broadcast, which was critically acclaimed by US media, featured a drab 0-0 draw.
NBC’s record viewing audience thus far this season was the 852,000 who watched Manchester United versus Manchester City on NBCSN on September 22, 2013.
In comparison to the ratings for Premier League broadcasts on NBC, the 2013 MLS Cup final — which was shown live on ESPN on a Saturday afternoon — set the record as the least-viewed MLS Cup in the league’s 17-year history with just 505,000 watching the game on English-language television in the States.
