Luis Enrique sets sights on managing Premier League club

Luis Enrique has admitted to wanting to manage a Premier League club. The former Barcelona boss most recently was the Spanish national team head coach. He departed the team after failing to advance past the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Morocco defeated Spain in the first knockout phase on penalties.

Spurs could be option for former Spain manager

“I follow above all the Premier [League] because I would like to go to England to work,” Enrique recently told Cadena Ser radio. “I wouldn’t go to any team but to one that could do important things, which greatly reduces the number, I don’t put my hopes up, really, because there are many candidates.”

Enrique has been linked with possibly taking over Tottenham Hotspur now that Antonio Conte has left the club. However, Spurs have apparently identified Julian Nagelsmann as their top target for the job. Along with Nagelsmann, Enrique could also have to battle with Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner for the position as well.

Luis Enrique likely prefers Premier League over Brazil

While he specifically mentioned the Premier League, Enrique also remains open to potentially managing another national team. The Spaniard did, however, rule out becoming the next Brazil boss. Brazil is currently on the search for a new head coach.

“I am lucky because my personal life fills me up,” the coach continued. “That it takes longer, that no offers arrive, well, it is what it is. I would go to a team with possibilities. That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t work in Spain.”

“There are several national teams that are looking for a manager. I don’t think I have the profile to guide a national team like that of Brazil. No one from Brazil has contacted me,” proclaimed Enrique. “I’ve had offers from national teams but not from clubs. I don’t rule it out. It would have to be a very, very powerful national team for me to accept.”

Waiting until the summer will most likely be Enrique’s best option. Besides the Spurs job, some other big clubs could be looking for a new head coach following the completion of the current campaign.
