Leeds agree Weston McKennie deal despite late offer from Forest

US Men’s National Team midfielder Weston McKennie is set to join Premier League club Leeds United, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 24-year-old has agreed personal terms, and is likely to join Jesse Marsch’s side on a loan deal for a €1.2 million fee, a deal that will also include an option-to-buy clause for €33 million plus add ons.

McKennie has arrived in England to complete a medical on Monday, ahead of finalizing the deal.

However, Nottingham Forest are trying to hijack the move with a late bid. Both Leeds United and Nottingham Forest are at risk of being relegated, so the clubs are keen to bring in more experience. And McKennie fits the bill.

Weston McKennie to Leeds United

Romano reports that Leeds United chairman and majority owner Andrea Radrizzani unlocked the deal for McKennie with Juventus on Friday night. Moreover, Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri said in his press conference that the American midfielder will not feature in Juventus’ game on Sunday as he is close to signing for Leeds.

Allegri said, “It would be pointless having him in the squad tomorrow as I believe the two clubs already have an agreement. I don’t know if the deal will be finalized but he’s been put on the transfer market so we’ve not got him in the squad.”

A McKennie move to Leeds United would be ideal for both sides as Juventus are in financial trouble, and could be banned from UEFA competitions. For Leeds United, McKennie would be able to play in a midfield alongside Tyler Adams in hopes that they can help the team stay up in the Premier League.

McKennie would be Leeds United’s third signing of the January transfer window after already having spent close to £40 million to acquire Max Wober and Georginio Rutter from RB Salzburg and Hoffenheim respectively.

Marsch is believed to have played an instrumental role in bringing McKennie to the club, and the midfielder had previously indicated that he would like to move to the Premier League. He is also set to join fellow USMNT team mates Brendan Aaronson and Adams in the heart of midfield as Leeds look to avoid the drop this season, sitting perilously close to the relegation places in 15th and are currently winless in 5 league games.
