Tim Wiese was criticized by retired goalkeeper Jens Lehmann after his part in Werder Bremen’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Tuesday night. Lehmann was number one for Germany for many years, and was one of the top goalkeepers in Europe during his time. Lehmann has been decorated with countless honours, including a Serie A title with AC Milan, a UEFA Cup victory with Schalke, a Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund, and a Premier League title and FA Cup triumph with Arsenal. At international level, Lehmann never lifted the World Cup, but received a third-placed medal in 2006, and a runners-up medal in 2002.
Despite his achievements, Lehmann is also well known for his antics on and off the field. At Arsenal, for example, he was nicknamed ‘Mad Jens’ for his eccentric goalkeeping and odd personality. Tim Wiese is quoted as saying, in response to Lehmann’s criticism of him, that Lehmann “belongs in the Muppet Show, on the couch or in a mental institution.”
