Germany and France both fell short of reaching the UEFA Nations League final and will now square off in the third-place match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. While there’s no title on the line, the clash offers both sides a chance to restore pride and secure valuable FIFA ranking points by reaching the podium.

Die Mannschaft is looking to rebound from a pair of recent disappointments on home soil. After exiting EURO 2024 in the quarterfinals, Germany was stunned by Portugal in a 2-1 defeat in the Nations League semifinals—also held on German turf. A strong performance against France is crucial to avoid further embarrassment in front of their fans.

Les Bleus, meanwhile, were eliminated in dramatic fashion by Spain in a thrilling 5-4 semifinal loss. Didier Deschamps’ squad fell behind 5-1 at one point before mounting a late comeback that ultimately came up short. Now, France will try to close the tournament on a positive note.

France without two key players

Though the third-place match may lack the prestige of a final, both teams are expected to field competitive lineups. However, France will be without two key players after injuries sustained during their loss to Portugal.

According to the French Football Federation, Ousmane Dembele suffered a muscular injury to his left quadriceps, while Bradley Barcola picked up a knock to his right knee. Both Paris Saint-Germain attackers have been ruled out of the match against Germany.
