FIFA confirm three opponents to Sepp Blatter's presidency

FIFA have confirmed the three candidates who will oppose Sepp Blatter’s presidency are Portugal legend Luis Figo, Dutch FA chief Michael Van Praag and Asian Football Confederation vice-president Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein of Jordan.

Former France international David Ginola and ex-FIFA deputy general secretary Jerome Champagne have been ruled out of the running process. Both individuals were unable to secure the backing of five national football associations which was required by FIFA.

The three confirmed candidates, along with Blatter, have been passed on to FIFA’s Ethic’s Committee who will perform integrity checks over the following week and a half. Once the checks are complete, the Electorial Committee will examine the paperwork and formally declare the relevant candidates to take part in the elections – which will be held on May 29th.

Each of FIFA’s 209 member associations hold a vote for the elections with the English FA intending to back Prince Ali of Jordan.

Blatter is attempting to earn his fifth term in office. The 78-year-old Swiss has held the presidency since 1998. He previously served as the general secretary under Joao Havelange.
