February could make or break Leicester City's title hopes

Leicester have bobbled and tried to seize control of the Premier League’s top spot for much of the season but their rivals for the title are still hot on their back. Manchester City and Arsenal are just a win away from disposing them of first place and Tottenham Hotspur are five points adrift.

However after this comes Manchester United who not an immediate threat to Leicester as they are 10 points behind, and this is when Leicester’s campaign gets interesting.

Whilst it would be one of the truly great moments in soccer if Leicester were to claim the Premier League crown, it would still be a great achievement if the Foxes could claim a top four finish and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

With a ten point safety gap and 45 points to play for, all is not sealed but one could also start to believe that at the very least the club could be playing amongst Europe’s elite next season.

Leicester’s title and Champions League qualification hopes could well come down to how they perform in February. Their schedule of fixtures look very menacing; Liverpool at home this week is followed by trips to Manchester City and Arsenal before rounding up the month with a home game against Norwich City.

There’s 12 points on the line and if Leicester can get at least 7 from that, they will have to be happy. But what if they can get more? It’s interesting to note that from March onwards, the Foxes will only face one other top five side in Manchester United. However their last game of the season, which could end up being all important, is away to the rejuvenated Chelsea.

With the fixtures in hand for Leicester, I have tallied up the points that the club could get and have come up with 25 points from the forty five remaining. That would give the club a total of 72 points. This may just fall short of a league title but 72 points has still been good enough for Champions League qualification from 7 of the last 10 Premier League campaigns.

Leicester dare to dream but it’s getting to the point now where they can wake up and believe that this campaign is going to be unique whatever the next three months has in store for them.
