Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said that he lost no sleep over the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from the club.
The Dutchman who took over the reins at Old Trafford last summer has already turned around the fortunes and won over the fans in quick time.
The 53-year-old also led the club to a first trophy in six years last week they beat Newcastle United to win the Carabao Cup in Wembley.
Piers Morgan interview reaction
One of the biggest decisions the Red Devils manager has made in his short reign is Ronaldo’s exit from the club following his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
The Portuguese had also claimed in the interview that he has no respect for ten Hag, claiming that the manager also didn’t reciprocate the same for him. The forward twice left matches early, before the final whistle and refused to play in one game after being named as a substitute.
Ronaldo contract terminated
United swiftly terminated Ronaldo’s contract as the 38-year-old joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, making him the world’s highest-paid player.
On Ronaldo’s exit, ten Hag said, “I had my reasons. They were obvious, and I also knew the consequences. It could have had a negative outcome. That is always possible in football. But I am not worrying. I sleep well also, even during those nights.”
The United manager also claimed that he takes decisions that are best for the club and stands by what he decides, adding that he isn’t afraid to face the consequences, “I have to stand by those decisions. I have to face the consequences and the impact of my decisions, not only in the short term but also for the longer term.
“Of course, you don’t always have a lot of time. In that period, I remember we had 10 days so I could consider which choice would be the best. You always have to think strategically. But that is my job and that is the responsibility I have to take.”
Since Ronaldo’s departure, United have been in red-hot form, winning 16 of their 20 games and currently sit third in the Premier League standings.
