Beckham Inspires Real Madrid to Late Win

If GolTV and Spain’s Primera Liga wanted to advertise the superiority of La Liga, today was the perfect advertisement. The triple bill of Deportivo La Coruna v Sevilla, Recreativo Huelva v Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid v Barcelona was simply astounding.

The most impressive two-sided match was Recreativo Huelva’s two goal comeback against Real Madrid only for Real to score a last minute winner through Roberto Carlos to make it 3-2. The story of the match was David Beckham who put on a simply unbelievable performance and being involved in all three goals. His ability to thread a ball through the midfield (and not just to float them in from the wings) tore Recreativo apart at times.

Real Madrid, yet again, looked like champions.

If Steve McClaren doesn’t put Beckham in his squad for the friendly against Brazil, he’s mad.

Barcelona turned on the charm offensive tonight as they ploughed through a very weak and disheartened Atletico Madrid side. The first 20 minutes of the match was tough going for Barca due to the wet weather conditions, but Frank Rijkaard’s side soon demolished Atletico with a 6-0 win.

The way Barcelona pulled Atletico apart was astonishing. Which goal was the best? Was it Zambrotta’s one touch and then lob over the goalkeeper? Was it Ronaldinho’s build-up and goal in the second half? Or what about Lionel Messi’s touch of class?

Sevilla looked like their team was nursing a hangover from the UEFA Cup triumph in their come-from-behind 2-1 win against Deportivo La Coruna. It looked like Deportivo was going to win the match and damage Sevilla’s title chances until the UEFA Cup champion equalized and then scored a very late winner through Freddy Kanoute.
