Madrid (AFP) – France international Steven Nzonzi, a World Cup winner in Russia, underwent a medical with Serie A side Roma on Tuesday ahead of a proposed move from Sevilla.
The 29-year-old midfielder was greeted by dozens of Roma supporters as he arrived at the airport in the Italian capital, before the club posted images of the player having a medical.
Nzonzi, who joined Sevilla from English club Stoke in 2015, featured in five of France’s seven games at the World Cup, including an appearance off the bench in the 4-2 win over Croatia in the final.
Sevilla confirmed they were in discussions with Roma and sporting director Monchi, who held a similar role at the Spanish club before moving to Italy last year.
“Nzonzi wasn’t in training (on Tuesday) with the permission of the club but there still isn’t a 100% deal and until one is signed, there’s nothing,” said Sevilla director of football Joaquin Caparros.
Reports suggest Nzonzi would cost Roma 30 million euros ($34 million), with the Italian transfer deadline to shut on Friday ahead of the start of the new season.
