Los Angeles (AFP) – Patrick Mahomes has lost his race to be fit for Sunday’s clash with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, the Kansas City Chiefs confirmed Friday.

Chiefs quarterback Mahomes has been battling to recover from a knee injury, and although keen to play on Sunday, will be rested instead.

“He just wasn’t ready right now,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Friday.

“That was our decision, not his. He wanted to play right after it happened. He just needs a little bit of time here.”

Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap against the Denver Broncos on October 17 and had been expected to miss around three weeks on the sideline.

However Mahomes, regarded as the best young quarterback in the NFL, had expressed optimism about his ability to recover quickly and had taken part in limited practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

Reid said Friday that Mahomes was “close” to being able to start again.

With Mahomes out, the Chiefs will be led by Matt Moore as they attempt to jolt the impressive Packers, who are 6-1 this season.
