Wolves Need to Change Their Style Of Play So They're Less Predictable

Mick McCarthy can now breathe a little better after Wolves ended a run of eight games without a win after picking up three points against bottom of the table Wigan.

On Sunday Wolves took the lead after 31 minutes when Jamie O’Hara connected with a cross from Kevin Doyle. But Ben Watson equalised for Wigan when he was awarded a penalty kick for a block on Emmerson Boyce. Watson netted the rebound after Hennessey’s initial save.

David Edwards and Stephen Ward went on to seal the win against a frustrating Wigan.

This was an end-to-end game with both sides wanting that early goal. Wolves fell lucky after Rodallega missed a sitter and the best chance of the game just before O’Hara scored the first goal. Wigan’s attacking force of Di Santo, Rodallega and Moses were intimidating for Wolves throughout the game, after creating plenty of chances to see off Wolves in the first half. Wigan’s midfield totally controlled the first half although Wolves made that easy for them after numerous passes went straight into their possession. If it wasn’t for Wigan not taking their chances early on, Wolves would of gotten destroyed.

Wolves have disappointingly conceded ten goals in six home fixtures this season which has to be causing one of many problems for Mick McCarthy. It’s been a rocky season for Wolves fans so far but Mick McCarthy has “no complaints with the way his team is performing.”

To stay in the Premiership Wolves need to change their style of play. Wolves depend on wide players to deliver the goods for them and very rarely play down the middle unless on a break. To progress from this, more balls need to go into Doyle’s feet to create opportunities in and around the area. Being too predictable with the way that they play will come back to haunt them towards the end of the season.

Although Wolves fans are the most passionate in the league, I believe that if the team doesn’t change their style of play, they could be in big trouble towards the end of the season.

Wolves fans…where do you think you will finish this season? More importantly, let me know your thoughts on whether the strategy that your team is using at the moment will keep you up.
