Weston McKennie wanted by Dortmund and Bournemouth

Juventus and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie is on the eye of a number of clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Bournemouth. The turn of the year into 2023 means the January transfer window is officially open. Therefore, clubs can begin to acquire new assets for the back half of the campaign.

Weston McKennie could be one of those players, with Borussia Dortmund and Bournemouth expressing interest, according to Calcio Mercato. Juventus want to sell the American midfielder. After arriving from Schalke in the summer of 2021 for just over $20 million after a season-long loan spell, McKennie did not explode on to the scene. While he is a decent player, he only shows his brilliance in flashes. Four goals in 29 appearances last season led into three goals and an assist with 16 appearances in the current campaign.

Bournemouth and Borussia Dortmund are a pair of clubs eyeing up Weston McKennie. He has experience in Germany, rising through the ranks with Schalke before making his first-team debut. Then, Bournemouth is an interesting landing spot due to the Cherries’ infusion of money under a new American owner.

In turn, Juventus would use the money to shore up other locations. Paul Pogba is coming back from injury after missing all games of the current season. World Cup runner-up Adrien Rabiot is the other man in the midfield Max Allegri can use. Juventus believes it can still get a decent sum from selling McKennie.

Juventus looks to sell Weston McKennie to Dortmund or Bournemouth

Part of McKennie’s challenge is simply staying healthy. Right as the midfielder looks to hit his stride in Serie A, an injury stunts his progression. In his two-and-a-half seasons so far in Turin, McKennie missed a total of 27 games due to injury or illness. The longest stint was from late February through the end of the 2021/22 campaign. A metatarsal fracture kept him our as Juventus limped into fourth in the league.

Despite the injury history, Calcio Mercato estimates Juventus can earn around $40 million for McKennie. There are benefits to selling Americans, with three players making transfer to the Premier League for at least $24 million over the last few years. Bournemouth could join those ranks by bringing one of the USMNT’s most important players to the Premier League.

Or, Borussia Dortmund could bring McKennie back to Germany. McKennie performed decently as a young midfielder in the top German flight. Plus, Dortmund has a reputation for getting the most out of players and producing talent. Remember, McKennie is still just 24. He promises to be a key component of the USMNT’s success for the next decade.
