Wayne Rooney could miss the remainder of the season with knee ligament damage

Manchester United could be without the services of Wayne Rooney for the remainder of the season after the forward suffered an injury during the dying minutes of his side’s 3-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday.

Initial tests on his knee were inconclusive, and Rooney was deemed fit enough to travel to London for the PFA Player of the Year dinner on Sunday night.

Even though the injury is not considered serious, the fear is that Rooney sustained knee ligament damage which could rule the United captain out for one month – thus eliminating him from the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old is in danger of missing United’s remaining league fixtures against West Brom (home), Crystal Palace (away), Arsenal (home) and Hull City (away).

The Reds are currently in fourth place in the Premier League and hold a seven-point advantage over Liverpool and Tottenham for the final Champions League spot.

Nervous fans will have to wait until manager Louis van Gaal’s pre-match press conference on Friday for official word on Rooney’s status.

In other club news, United striker Robin van Persie scored his first goals since February during a match with the club’s under-21 side.

Van Persie scored a brace during the team’s 4-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
