It took a volleyed perfect ball from Jesse Lingard, but Wayne Rooney is finally back on the scoresheet. In the process, Rooney has ended Manchester United’s 404-minute goal-drought, ending the threat of a fourth straight scoreless draw by putting his team up on CSKA Moscow, 1-0:

Manchester United went on to defeat the Russian champions by the same score, moving Rooney’s side top of UEFA Champions League’s Group D after Wolfsburg’s loss at PSV Eindhoven.

For Rooney, it was his seventh goal in 19 all-competition appearances this season but only his second goal since Sept. 26, with his move into Manchester United’s central striking role having become a focal point of criticism. Today, Rooney again started as the team’s No. 9 and missed a chance from three yards out early in the second half, though Lingard’s volleyed cross helped him redeem himself in the 79th minute.
