Aston Villa have confirmed the appointment of Tim Sherwood as the club’s new manager. The former Tottenham boss replaces Paul Lambert, who was sacked via the telephone on Wednesday.
Sherwood will not be in charge of Villa on Sunday when they host Leicester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Coach Scott Marshall will be in charge of the team during the cup competition.
“It is a great honor to manage one of the biggest clubs in English football,” Sherwood said in a brief statement today. “I can’t wait to get started and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
The 46-year-old replaced Andre Villas-Boas as Spurs manager in December 2013, but parted company with the club at the conclusion of the season. He had been rumored to be in line for jobs at West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers in recent weeks. But he has elected to take on the challenge of steering Aston Villa out of the relegation zone.
Sherwood’s winning percentage was 50% during his 28 matches in charge of Tottenham: 14 wins, 4 draws and 10 losses.
Aston Villa are currently in eighteenth place on the Premier League table, collecting only 22 points in 25 matches. They also boast the league’s worst scoring record, notching only 12 goals in the English top flight this season.
Programming note: Aston Villa vs. Leicester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup will be shown LIVE on Sunday, February 15th at 7:30am EST on FOX Sports 1 and FoxSoccer2Go.
