2008 Summer Tour: Another EPL Team Heading to Asia Instead of U.S.A.

The number of Premier League clubs who could possibly play summer friendlies in the United States or Canada has been reduced by one. That’s because Tottenham Hotspur looks likely to play matches this summer in India, Singapore, China and Netherlands according to The Daily Mail newspaper. The article also mentions the possibility of Newcastle United playing a friendly against Spurs in China, too.

So far, West Ham United is the only Premier League club confirmed to play in North America this summer. They’re scheduled to play against the MLS All-Star team on July 24, 2008 in Toronto, Canada.

Chelsea recently announced they plan on playing friendlies this summer in Malaysia and China, which also rules them out of playing in North America. In fact, it seems that more and more Premier League clubs are playing in Asia each summer while the number coming to the States is getting smaller and smaller. So far, Liverpool and Derby are reportedly making plans to tour the United States and/or Canada.

Everton and Aston Villa, meanwhile, played friendlies in the U.S. last summer, so hopefully they’ll return stateside although no announcement has been made.
