Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin ruled out for the rest of season

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

The France international came up lame during the Saints’ 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday and tests have revealed a problem with a ligament on his left knee.

The injury will see Schneiderlin miss Southampton’s remaining league fixtures against: Sunderland (away), Leicester City (away), Aston Villa (home) and Manchester City (away).

During an interview with BBC Radio Solent, manager Ronald Koeman broke the news which could throw a wrench into Southampton’s late season push for European qualification.

“It’s not good, he will be out for the rest of the season,” Koeman said.

“It’s a ligament on his left knee and he’s out for three, four five weeks.

“You like to have everyone available and Morgan is a key player for the team, an important one in the midfielder position.

“Injuries are part of football and we have Victor Wanyama back from his suspension.”

Southampton are currently in seventh place in the Premier League and would need a top-six finish to qualify for Europe. They’re eight points behind fourth place Manchester United, but only a single point separates them from Liverpool and Tottenham.
